Rare tumour risk Syndromes: the cost of complex care pathways through the eye of the PREVENTABLE project

Prof. Carla Oliveira, a Principal Researcher and group Leader at i3S - Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, University of Porto – Portugal, will be the lecturer during this webinar. She is internationally recognized for her research on hereditary gastric cancer, CDH1 biology, and inherited cancer predisposition syndromes. Her work integrates basic, translational, and clinical research to improve genetic diagnosis, early cancer detection, prevention, and precision medicine. She is a founder member of the ERN Genturis.

In this webinar, Carla Oliveira will present and discuss the outcomes of the PREVENTABLE project, which analysed care pathways and healthcare costs for 2,596 patients across nine countries, covering eight major Rare Tumour Risk Syndromes (RTRS). Results showed that two-thirds of carriers entered preventive surveillance before cancer developed, leading to improved survival in several syndromes and better outcomes through early cancer detection. Although prevention requires ongoing investment, treatment after cancer diagnosis was consistently more expensive due to high-cost interventions. Overall, the findings support a shift from reactive cancer treatment to proactive prevention and specialised care for RTRS patients. To increase awareness on these syndromes and related care pathways, the PREVENTABLE project launched a Learning hub, where patients, clinicians and care givers can find personal histories, documentaries and infographics on the eight Preventable RTRS (https://rtrs-hub.preventable.eu/).
